How to Become an Online Poker Player

Poker evolved from different kinds of card games, to the point of becoming one of the well known games in the gambling world. If you want to enter or taste the gambling world of online poker, first I would recommend learning the dry rules of the game. There are 52 cards in the pack, and the ranking of the individual cards, from high to low, is ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. There is no ranking between the suits in poker, so for example the king of hearts and the king of spades are equal.

A hand consists of five cards. Poker ranks are always based on five cards only. To play online poker, it is important to understand which hands are better than other hands.

1. Royal Flush

When all five cards form a straight from a ten to an ace and all five cards of the same suit. In poker suit does not matter and pots are split between equally strong hands.

2. Straight Flush

When all five cards are in sequences and of the same suit. Between two straight flushes, the one containing the higher top card is higher.

3. Four of a kind

When four cards are of the same rank. If two players share the same Four of a Kind, the fifth card will decide who wins the pot, the bigger card the better.

4. Full House

When three cards are of the same rank, together with any two cards of the same rank, in a poker game this means it is a full house. When comparing full houses, the rank of the three cards determines which is higher. If the threes of a kind were equal, the rank of the pairs would decide.

5. Flush

When all five cards are of the same suit but are not continuance. The highest card of the five makes out the rank of the flush. When comparing two flushes, the highest card determines which is higher. If the highest cards are equal then the second highest is compared; if those are equal too, then the third highest, and so on.

6. Straight

When all five cards are in sequences but with mixed suits. When comparing two sequences, the one with the higher ranking top card is better. Ace can count high or low in a straight, but not both at once.

7. Three of a Kind

When a player has three cards of the same rank. This combination is also known as Triplets or Trips. When comparing two threes of a kind, the hand in which the three equal cards are of higher rank is better. If you have to compare two threes of a kind where the sets of three are of equal rank, then the higher of the two remaining cards in each hand are compared, and if those are equal, the lower odd card is compared.

8. Two Pairs

A pair in an online poker game is two cards of equal rank. In a hand with two pairs, the two pairs are of different ranks (otherwise you would have four of a kind), and there is an odd card to make the hand up to five cards. When comparing hands with two pairs, the hand with the highest pair wins, irrespective of the rank of the other. If the higher pairs are equal, the lower pairs are compared, if both pairs are the same, the odd cards are compared.

9. Pair

When two cards are of equal rank, and three other cards with different rank from the pair and from each other. When comparing two such hands, the hand with the higher pair is better. If the pairs are equal, compare the highest ranking odd cards from each hand; if these are equal compare the second highest odd card, and if these are equal too, compare the lowest odd cards.

10. High Card

Five cards which do not form any of the combinations listed above. When comparing two such hands, the one with the better highest card wins. If the highest cards are equal the second cards are compared; if they are equal as well the third cards are compared, and so on.

What is Poker?

Poker is a family of card games, almost invariably played as gambling games. Additionally, online poker is a game of chance. However, when you introduce the concept of betting, online poker gains quite a bit of skill and psychology. Online Poker is played with a standard pack of fifty two cards. The cards are ranked from high to low:

1. Ace

3. Queen

However, no suit is higher than another. All online poker hands contain five cards, the highest hand wins. While the game of poker is played in hundreds of variations, most follow the same basic pattern of play.

Community Card Games:

In community card poker games, each player is dealt privately an incomplete hand (hole cards) which is then combined with the community cards to make a complete hand. The set of community cards is called a board, and may be dealt in a simple line or arranged in a special pattern; rules of each poker game determine how the community cards may be combined with each player private poker hand.

Texas Holdem:

The most popular community card game today is probably Texas Holdem (and variants) originating sometime in the 1970s. In home games, it is typical to use an ante, while casinos typically use only blinds for these poker games. Fixed limit games are most common in online poker rooms and casinos, while spread limit games are more common in home poker games. No limit and pot limit games are less common, but some online poker games play particularly well with those structures.

Betting Rounds:

As with stud poker, later betting rounds often have a higher limit than earlier betting rounds. Each betting round begins with the player to the left of the dealer (when blinds are used, the first round begins with the player after the big blind), so community card games are generally positional games.

Most community card games do not play well with lowball hand values, though some do play very well at high-low split, especially with ace-to-five low values, making it possible to win both halves of a pot. When played high-low split, there is generally a minimum qualifying hand for low (often 8-high), and it is played cards speak.
