A publicized poker game at the American Legion post in Black Walnut was quickly cancelled. The Pennsylvania State Police Office of Liquor Control Enforcement and the Wyoming County District Attorneys office had been warned about a poker game with a possibility of large profits.
The advertisement appeared in The Rocket-Courier and noted that the game would be limited to 300 players. Sgt. James Degnan of the State Police Office of Liquor Control Enforcement said that the limit on the number of players implied a potential of big payouts at the end of the evening. According to some estimation, the grand prize could have been 10,000 dollars in cash.
According to Section 55-13 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, the planned poker tournament is considered illegal gambling. Even though the American Legion post is allowed to operate small games of chance, it does not have a license for card games.
