Smoke on the Water
Deep Purple's hit from 1970, "Smoke on the Water", tells the story of a fire starting at a concert in Montreux casino theatre. This June, they are returning to perform at the Swiss lakeside at the 40th annual jazz festival.
The song tells about a fire that broke out on December 1971 during a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert. The fire started after a fan shot a flare gun to the ceiling, and destroyed the Montreux casino complex. Deep Purple saw the fire from their hotel and the next day they recorded their album "Machine Head".
The festival will begin on June 30 and will continue until July 15, and host over 100 groups. The artists at the festival will include Santana, Sting, Black Eyed Peas, Diana Krall, BB King and Deep Purple. Each year the festival attracts approximately 250,000 people, and this year, this number is expected to rise due to the 40th anniversary.
